1. Don’t Skip Annual Examinations

There are various reasons for this, such as the following:

2. Stay Active

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, along with at least two days of strength training.

Far too often, people think that means you need to be an all-star track runner, bench press 250 pounds, and keep that weight increasing. However, it’s about doing what you can do and keeping your muscles and body moving and working. If all you can do is walk 20 minutes a day, that’s fine. But if you prefer aerobics and can do it, by all means, do it.

 

3. Get Out and Socialize

Estimates vary, but the American Perspectives Survey revealed that 12 percent of adults have no close friends. Another study showed that up to 22 percent of people have no friends.

While some individuals do enjoy that life, humans are social beings by nature, and not getting enough socialization can take 7.5 years off a person’s life compared to those with strong social ties. That’s not counting the other issues that a lack of socialization can cause, such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • An increased risk of dementia
  • High blood pressure
  • Cancer

Try having one or two people you talk to regularly, whether it’s a friend or family member. At least once every one or two weeks, have an in-person interaction with someone. If you don’t have any close friends or family members, participate in clubs, go to the gym, or volunteer to get yourself out and socializing.

 

4. Keep Your Mind Working

Brain fog is a common problem that affects both men and women as they age. It can happen from hormonal changes, anxiety, sleep changes, or various health concerns. The brain naturally ages, and if you lead a high-stress life, have fluctuating blood sugar levels, or don’t drink enough water, you could have decreased mental clarity, trouble concentrating, or memory impairments.

To keep your brain healthy, eat a well-balanced diet that’s high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. You want to keep your blood sugar stable. You should also exercise regularly, manage your stress, and prioritize sleep. Besides that, some other things you should do are as follows:

  • Learn a new language or skill.
  • Do puzzles
  • Take up a hobby
  • Learn something new regularly.
  • Read
  • Have conversations that require thought and reflection

 

5. Be In-Tune With Your Body

As you age, your chances of having a health issue increase. While you may have originally ignored little signs that something was wrong, such as an ache or constant tiredness, those seemingly normal issues could be signs that something is wrong. Rather than ignoring those symptoms, make it a point to see a health professional to know for certain it’s nothing major.

Better safe than sorry, and if you do have a health condition, the doctor can intervene early. Often, an early diagnosis leads to a better prognosis, and you won’t need to have as extensive a treatment protocol.
